Apple Pie
Ingredients:
- For the crust:
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
- For the filling:
- 6 to 7 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced tart apples
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions:
- Make the crust:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt.
- Use your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Drizzle in the ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork until the dough just comes together.
- Gather the dough into a ball, flatten it into a disk, and wrap it in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Make the filling:
- In a large bowl, combine the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat.
- Assemble the pie:
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out half of the dough into a 12-inch circle. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate.
- Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust.
- Roll out the remaining dough into a 10-inch circle. Place the dough over the filling, crimping the edges to seal.
- Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
- Bake the pie for 15 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and bake for an additional 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
- Let the pie cool completely before serving.
Enjoy!
Tips:
- Use tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Mcintosh.
- Don't overcrowd the pie plate with apples. This will prevent them from cooking evenly.
- Don't overbake the pie. The filling should be tender and juicy, not mushy.
- Let the pie cool completely before serving. This will help the filling set and prevent it from oozing out when you cut into the pie.
I hope you enjoy this delicious apple pie!
